Venezuela's Electoral Council 'Rejects Foreign Interference'

The president of Venezuela's National Electoral Council (CNE) has reiterated its rejection of attempts by foreign governments at interfering in the presidential elections scheduled for May 20.
"The CNE never ceases to be surprised at how some governments have such gross interference with Venezuela's internal politics and seek to create tensions," Tibisay Lucena told teleSUR.
She questioned calls by the Lima group to suspend the ongoing electoral process: "It's grotesque. How is a foreign government going to ask for that? The CNE obeys the statutes of the Constitution and the sovereignty exercised through the vote, not foreign governments."
Lucena also denounced fresh sanctions imposed against the electoral authorities "for undemocratic reasons without any foundation."
"They seek more democracy, but they want to eliminate an electoral process; they want to prevent the people from deciding, so what is their concept of democracy?"
In terms of international accompaniment, Lucena confirmed the necessary agreements had been signed as much as three years ago. "In the case of Russia, we want to implement technical and technological exchanges," she said.
More than 50 international companions, as well as different observer missions, such as Ceela, will be monitoring the May 20 elections.
