By Ministry of Youth Development and Sports
Vieux Fort South and La Clery made history as the first-ever champions of the Semi-Pro Football League’s Tier 2 and Tier 1 divisions following a thrilling finale at Dennery Playing Field on Saturday 26, 2024.
Vieux Fort South opened the evening with an emphatic 5-1 win over South Castries, breaking the tournament's favorites unbeaten streak. Led by Jevic McFarlane, who was named Player of the Final, Vieux Fort’s fast-paced offense saw goals from Obafami Poyotte and Moses Henry, each netting twice. Though South Castries struck back in the second half, an 80th-minute goal from Hosea Mathurin sealed the victory and Vieux Fort’s promotion to Tier 1.
The Tier 1 final between Central Castries and La Clery was equally intense. Central Castries scored first but faced a setback with a red card to Janal Wilfred in the 32nd minute. La Clery’s Uhann Degazon quickly equalized, and Mervin St. Romain’s goal in the 80th minute, followed by Andrus Remy’s powerful strike in added time, secured La Clery’s 3-1 win and the championship.
Vieux Fort South and La Clery’s victories marked a historic night for St. Lucian football as they claimed their places as champions of the inaugural season.
