Saint Lucia is grappling with a severe water shortage, prompting the Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) to declare a water-related emergency. This announcement was made by WASCO's CEO, Zilta Leslie George, during a press conference on Tuesday.

The emergency declaration follows consultations with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Agriculture, The Water Resources Management Agency, and The Met Office. George highlighted the critical situation, explaining, "The issue of this Declaration is expedient owing to the exceptional shortage of rain throughout the island and a serious deficiency of supplies of water which is affecting the entire island."

In accordance with Section 10 of the Water and Sewerage Act Cap. 9.03, the declaration mandates the prompt coordination of actions and special regulations to reduce potable water wastage. George stated, "All residents of Saint Lucia are urged to cease the use of potable water for any non-potable uses and from any activity which may cause the contamination of the water."

Effective May 14, the declaration prohibits the use of potable water for non-essential purposes and activities that may contaminate water sources. Although enforcement fines will not be implemented until the declaration is gazetted, WASCO has reported a drastic reduction in water levels at both northern and southern intakes and reservoirs, with some areas experiencing a reduction of up to 75%.

Jason Ernest, Director of the Water Resources Management Agency, noted that this is the fourth water emergency declared in the past decade, with the last one occurring in 2020. "It is not business as usual!" Ernest declared, emphasizing the severity of the situation.

He outlined specific restrictions to be imposed, including limitations on vehicle washing, lawn and garden watering, concrete mixing, block making, pressure washing, and filling swimming pools. Ernest appealed to the public for cooperation in adhering to these restrictions, stressing the necessity of collective effort in managing the water crisis.

The declaration aims to ensure the sustainable use of the island’s limited water resources during this critical period. Authorities urge all residents to comply with the new regulations to help mitigate the impact of the water shortage on Saint Lucia’s communities and environment.
