PRESS RELEASE - The Water and Sewerage Company Inc. WASCO, describes as fake news, claims circulating on social media platforms suggesting that pipe-borne water is unsafe for public consumption.

The reports which surfaced on April 13th 2021 also referenced the National Emergency Management Organization as having authenticated the false claim.

WASCO has rubbished any claims disputing the safety of pipe borne water stressing that there are established mechanisms in place to address any threats to the supply long before it reaches consumers.

We are however mindful of public concerns regarding possible contamination of our water sources due to increasing volcanic activity in St Vincent and the Grenadines and the presence of volcanic ash that has travelled to several neighbouring islands.

As such, WASCO continues to address all concerns regarding this important issue and allay public fears.

WASCO wishes to stress that increased monitoring and surveillance continues on our water sources.

Frequent rounds of water sample testing are being conducted to analyze the pH, mineral and turbidity levels, that may build-up in the water source in case of high amounts of volcanic ash.

This would involve the flushing or draining of all affected systems among other measures.

As a precautionary measure, the Grace system was flushed on April 13th 2021, as a safeguard against the increased levels of Sarahan dust and volcanic ash at the intake.

The issue has since been resolved and the system is now operational. No other systems have been affected.
