WASCO Marks Occupational Health & Safety Week 2025 With Renewed Focus On Safety Culture & Innovation

By WASCO

World Day for Safety and Health at Work, observed annually on April 28th, is a global campaign to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases. In recognition of this, the Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) will observe Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Week from April 22nd to 28th, 2025 under the theme: “Revolutionizing health and safety: the role of AI and digitalization at work.” This year’s theme highlights the shifting landscape of workplace safety in an increasingly digital world. As more sectors embrace digital systems, the 2025 message emphasizes the need to integrate smart, responsive technologies that can anticipate and mitigate risks, ultimately fostering safer, more adaptive work environments.

While the global theme acknowledges the growing role of technology in workplace safety, WASCO’s activities for the week will take a more grounded approach, focusing on practical safety and wellness practices across the company. As a utility provider, many of WASCO’s employees operate in dynamic field conditions, often navigating remote areas, uneven terrain, adverse weather, and exposure to potentially hazardous wildlife. These realities underscore the importance of consistent safety reinforcement and proactive engagement in health and safety practices. Occupational Health and Safety Week provides an ideal platform to address these challenges head-on through targeted activities and discussions tailored to the unique risks faced by field and office personnel alike.

Throughout the week, staff will engage in various initiatives to strengthen workplace safety and encourage vigilance across the organization. The week concludes on Monday, April 28th, World Day for Safety and Health at Work, with a Health Fair held in partnership with the Bureau of Health. This event will be open to the public and will offer a variety of health services from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at WASCO’s offices in L’Anse Road, Castries and Beanfield, Vieux Fort. As the company continues to strengthen its internal capacity and promote a culture of safety, initiatives like Occupational Health and Safety Week remain critical in reinforcing safe work practices, supporting employee wellbeing, and fostering a shared responsibility for health and safety among staff and the wider community.
