United States sets new single-day record for COVID-19 deaths 4,491

Three Americans died of COVID-19 every minute on Tuesday, when a record-setting 4,327 deaths were confirmed and 215,805 new cases were recorded, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Since the first case of the deadly bug was first recorded in the US on Jan. 21, 2020, the country has reported 22,849,333 cases and 380,821 deaths, according to the latest figures, which show that cases continue to surge.

The only other time the number of deaths eclipsed 4,000 was Jan. 7, when 4,194 were reported, according to Johns Hopkins, whose data showed that the US had averaged more than 3,223 deaths daily in the past week.

On Tuesday, federal officials agreed to send states additional vaccine doses requested by several governors, as the US tries to ramp up the pace of inoculations with the daily death toll hovering at 3,200, according to Reuters.

Meanwhile, hospitalizations and case numbers also remain dangerously high with 131,000 patients undergoing treatment across the US, according to the Daily Mail.

The situation is particularly bleak in Los Angeles, where health officials are urging people to wear masks inside their own homes to stop the deadly virus from spreading among family members.  

Officials say the spiking rate of cases in LA is likely due to family gatherings that have taken place over Thanksgiving and Christmas, according to the outlet.

“One of the more heartbreaking conversations that our health care workers share is about these last words when children apologize to their parents and grandparents for bringing COVID into their homes for getting them sick,” County Supervisor Hilda Solis told the LA Times.  

“Please, for your loved ones, stay home. Stay safe. Keep your loved ones alive,” she said.
