Venezuela wants to "reclaim" two thirds of Guyana

CARICOM, the Caribbean Community, has expressed its disappointment following the remarks of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The organization defends the position of Guyana, a member country of CARICOM, and the integrity of its current borders. Irfaan Ali, Guyana's new president spoke of deep concern.

The CARICOM declaration is signed by Keith Rowley, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago and new President of CARICOM. His country has already hosted thousands of refugees who fled Venezuela.

So far, Keith Rowley has supported the Venezuelan regime which has made Washington angry. The Americans wanting Nicolas Maduro to leave.  

Nicolas Maduro's declaration comes after the decision of the International Court of Justice, the ICJ, to draw, once and for all, the borders between these neighboring countries.

On January 15, 2021, the ICJ will announce the legal framework and the duration of the deliberations to rule on this border.

The current border was established by an agreement signed in 1899, a document disputed by Venezuela since 1962. The mineral wealth is considerable in this area which extends over 159,542 square kilometers.

Caracas refuses to recognize the competences of the ICJ.

In a meeting of his Defense Council, Nicolas Maduro announced the creation of an Atlantic facade for Venezuela, his name for the Guyanese territory he wants to take back.  

So far, Nicolas Maduro has supported the policy of his predecessor Hugo Chavez to create a zone of peace in the Caribbean. Today economic considerations are too important.

For several months, the American, Chinese and Canadian oil companies, among others, have been exploiting the new oil fields located in the territorial waters of Guyana claimed by Venezuela.

Canada and the United States condemned Nicolas Maduro's statement. These countries support the process initiated by the ICJ.
